Scientific and Scholarly Research

Yerevan State University is a center for research where 25 full and corresponding members of the Academy of Sciences, 130 Doctors of Sciences and approximately 700 Candidates of Sciences work.

Research in 36 basic areas is conducted at the Lazerayin Tekhnika Research and Production Facility, in 26 scientific research laboratories, in 13 research groups and in 110 departments. University scientists and scholars do research in high energy physics, laser technology, function theory, astrophysics, theoretical physics, radio physics, solid state physics, organic and physical chemistry, medicine, biotechnology, synthesis of biologically-active substances, agriculture, mineral resources, Armenology, lexicography, Armenian history, and other areas.

In Armenology, university scholars research the history and culture of the Armenian people, its ties with other people, lexicography, and other matters.

Lazerayin Tekhnika Research and Production Facility

Lazerayin Tekhnika was founded in 1988. It comprises seven research and production facilities (for non-linear optics, solid-state lasers, eximeral lasers, automatic systems, crystallization of high temperature oxides, non-linear substances, and optical elements) and four scientific laboratories (for theoretical physics, gas lasers, crystallization of fluoride substances, and computers).

Theoretical and experimental research is performed in the areas of modern lasers and solid-state physics.

Principal areas of research include the study of the effect of lasers on substances; the generation of optical radiation and substances subject to transformation; the technology of growing crystals; the development of laser equipment with applications in the national economy; and the development of laser technology.

Lazerayin Tekhnika has exhibited a variety of its products in international exhibitions. Many of its products have been awarded certificates and gold and silver medals. More than 50 inventions have been licensed.

In the past ten years, eight doctoral and more than thirty Candidate of Sciences dissertations have been defended at Lazerayin Tekhnika.

Publications and Printing House

The Yerevan University Press is the only printing press of an institution of higher education in the Republic. Its history is closely intertwined with that of the University itself. It is an academic and scholarly press, at once serving the goals and essence of the University as a center of education and scholarship.

The Press largely published the works of University faculty, although it also published worthy manuscripts from outside. Priority is given to academic literature in all subjects taught at the University, i.e., textbooks, reference works, lectures, and methodological materials. A significant proportion of the works published are monographs and collections which highlight the valuable research conducted in the University's departments and laboratories.

Yerevan University Press has consistently published works in Armenology and brought to the reader's table books illuminating important issues in Armenian history, geography, literature, linguistics and language. There have been a number of series of books, such as the "Student Library," "Armenian Studies," "Celebrities of Armenian Culture," "Crestomathy", that have made a special contribution to the need for academic literature.

Books published by the University have received wide recognition not only in the Republic, but also abroad. The University Press has participated many times in Republic-wide and international book exhibitions.

Yerevan University Press has its printing house which over the years has been enlarged and modernized to increase printing capacities.

In the approximately 70 years of existence, Yerevan University Press, together with its printing house, has selflessly served the goal of printing and distributing university books and uniquely contributed to the flourishing of Armenian publishing and culture.

The University publishes the Yerevan University weekly newspaper, and the Handes Yerevani hamalsarani, the Banber Yerevani hamalsarani, and the Gitakan teghekagir journals.

International Ties

The University's ties abroad began in the very first years following its founding. Armenia's first national academic institution felt an urgent need for highly-qualified faculty in its effort to establish the University as a center of learning and scholarship. Many renowned scholars of Armenian origin moved to Armenia from some of Europe's most famous universities. Here they participate in an experiment to develop a university and curriculum corresponding to international standards. At the same time, as a result of their ties, academic exchanges, joint scholarly work and correspondence began with universities in Europe. In 1926-1927, the first group of Diasporan Armenians arrived for study at the University. following World War II the numbers of foreign students increased significantly and programs in university exchanges were begun. To date 6200 foreign students from 78 countries have studied at the University. Of these, 2370 have been Diasporan Armenians. Some 600 students have completed their studies and received Diploma of Higher Education or have defended a Candidate of Sciences or Doctor of Sciences dissertation at the University. Of these, 310 have been Diasporan Armenians. Fifty-two foreign students have successfully defended candidate of Sciences dissertations and of these twelve were Diasporan Armenians. Three Diasporan Armenians have defended Doctor of Sciences dissertations.

Currently the University has agreements with 58 universities in 23 countries including in the United States, Fresno, Riverside, Michigan, Northeastern, and George Mason Universities; in Argentina, the University of Buenos Aires; in Belgium, Ghent University; in Brazil, Campinas University; in Germany, Rostock University; in Egypt, Manufia and Mansuria Universities; in Italy, the Universities of Bologna, Florence and Venice; in Poland, Lublin University; in Lebanon, Hamazgayin University; in Hungary, Budapest University; in Great Britain, the University of London; in Mexico, the University of Mexico; in Syria, the University of Aleppo; in Slovakia, Bratislava University; in France, University of Montpellier 1, 2 and 3, University of Lyons 1, 2 and 3, University of Marseilles, University of Paris 6 and 7; and a number of universities in other countries. The University also participates in over 25 international academic exchange programs.

International academic exchanges have encompassed all spheres: undergraduate and graduate studies, academic research, lectures, advanced language study, specialized courses, scientific conferences, delegations, exhibitions, sporting events, performing arts, and academic competitions, etc. Approximately 200 to 250 persons a year participate in these exchanges. In general, in recent years the University has established ties with educational institutions and other organizations in 81 countries.

Physical Education and Sports

At the University's sports facilities students can work on their physical condition and overall health and develop their athletic skills. The Department of Physical Education and Sports, which is almost as old as the University itself, offers physical education in complement to students' academic studies.

Physical education is compulsory for students in the first and second years in all University faculties. There are various sports teams that compete in city, national and international competitions. The University's chess, basketball, volleyball, table tennis, wrestling, and down-hill skiing teams are well-known in the Republic. Students at the University have been champions and prize-winners in national ,European and the Olympic games.

In the summer many students attend the Dilijan Sports Camp. Approximately 150 students a hour train at the University's sports complex.
