Faculty of Chemistry

The Faculty of Chemistry trains students in the field of chemistry for employment in industry, institutions of higher learning, and scientific institutes. Graduates are certified as chemists, environmental chemists, and chemistry teachers. The Faculty has five departments : inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, analytic chemistry, physical and colloid chemistry, and catalysis. The Faculty also has three research laboratories where research is conducted by students, post-graduates and teaching staff.

The basic subjects of study are quantum chemistry, quantum mechanics, inorganic chemistry, organic chemistry, analytic chemistry, physical and colloid chemistry, the chemistry of high molecular combinations, the structure of matter, ecological chemistry, chemical technology, etc. The Faculty has received wide recognition for its research in these areas.

Principal areas of research are: synthesis and research of ecologically safe, biologically- and catalytically-active complex combinations that have applications in medicine and that are produced by organic ligands of transitional, dispersed and rare elements; synthesis of saturated and unsaturated lactones, chemical substitutions, structure and biological activity, purposeful syntheses; chemistry of peroxides; obtaining and application of molded metallic and organic complex catalyzers with high perforation and a developed surface in ecological catalysis, non-waste chemical synthesis, and structural materials; development of selective, simple and reliable optical , electrochemical and chromatographic methods for identifying and dividing micro-quantities of precious metals and rare elements.

The Faculty has won world-wide recognition for its work on lactones and peroxides. Beginning in the 1994-1995 academic year, the Faculty will also offer pharmacology.

Faculty of Biology

This Faculty has eight departments with affiliated research laboratories: biochemistry; biophysics; botany; plant physiology and microbiology; genetics and the study of cells; ecology and preservation of nature; zoology; human and animal physiology. Training is in the three major fields of study (biology, biochemistry and biophysics) with further specialization in one of the eight departments.

Research on the fermentative mechanisms of nitrogen exchanges, the impact of hormones, and the botany, flora and fungi of Armenia have brought the Faculty widespread international recognition. Research is conducted on higher plant biotechnology, the impact of Armenia's environment on heredity in humans, plants and microbes, and the ecological evaluation of biocoenoses under conditions of pollution. The Faculty is working on the classification of a number of animals found in Armenia, homeostasis in organisms, issues with respect to evolution, and neurochemical mechanisms for regulating an organism's inner functions.

Graduates of the Faculty are certified biologists, biochemists, biophysicists, and teachers of biology and chemistry. They are employed in scientific institutes, in teaching and in agriculture and industry.

The Faculty's schools of biochemistry, molecular and cellular biophysics, cellular embryology, human genetics, mycology and neurophysiology are well-known.

Faculty of Geology

The Faculty of Geology has the following departments: general and applied geology; historical and regional geology; cartography and mineralogy; and geophysical methodology for the exploration and investigation of useful mineral deposits. A seismic station for registering earthquakes has operated in association with the Faculty since 1978.

The Faculty trains specialists in geological mining and the exploration and investigation of useful minerals and in hydro-geology and geological engineering.

Graduates are eligible to work as geologists, geophysicists, hydro-geologists, and geological engineers. They work in the mining industry and in research and production design institutes.

Apart form theoretical courses and practical and laboratory studies, students receive on-the-job academic and industrial training in geological survey groups and in research laboratories.

The Faculty is working on the design of hydrodynamic structures in Armenia, on determining the hydro-geological and geo-engineering aspects of mines, on the search for and investigation of underground water resources, and on the study of geo-engineering issues. It has developed a new seismic map of Armenia and a map of magnetic formations. The Faculty has also investigated the formation and distribution of copper and molybdenum deposits in Armenia and it has developed methodology for the geophysical investigation of landslides.

The Faculty enjoys strong academic and scientific ties with a number of internationally-known research centers.

Faculty of History

The History Faculty was one of the first faculties established at the University. It has departments in Armenian History; Ancient and Medieval History; Modern History; and Archeology and Ethnology. Beginning in 1990 a department of the History and Theory of International Relations was established at the Faculty.

Numerous courses in historiography and the social sciences are taught. Serious attention is given to language training in Uratian, Ancient Greek, Latin, Russian, English, French, German, Turkish, Persian and Arabic.

The principal academic areas of study are the political history of the Armenian people, Armenian historiography and sources of Armenian history, history of Armenian culture, historical ethnography and geography, archeology, ethnography, Armenian Christian society and the church (origin, establishment and development), the Armenian Question and international relations.

Over the years, the Faculty has made significant contributions to scholarship. It is a considered the second most important center if historiography in Armenia after the National Academy of Sciences. Recently the Faculty has also become a well-known center for Armenian cartography and the study of Armenia's historical geography.

Graduates of the Faculty of History receive certification as historians and teachers of history. They find employment principally in schools as well as universities, various institutes of the National Academy of Sciences, the Matenadaran, archival centers and elsewhere.

The Faculty has extensive ties with universities and academic centers in the Russian Federation, Georgia, France, Italy, Germany and other countries.
